Commentary/Analysis by Bob “Ninja” Porras April 19, 2026

Your use case should determine your equipment, not the other way around.

The pistol optic market is full of options, and more choices do not make the decision easier. Brand names, price tags, and hype do not matter as much as mission, environment, vision, and training volume. While this article references “pistol” optics, the same principles apply to rifle optics. Selecting a red dot for a rifle involves additional considerations and will be addressed separately, including both primary and backup sighting solutions.

Unfortunately, there is no universal solution. You’re going to have to put in the research and do some homework yourself to find the right solution. Red dots, green dots, and iron sights all have strengths and limitations. None of them are shortcuts to accuracy. They are tools, and every tool is only as effective as the shooter behind it. Fundamentals still matter. Grip, presentation, sight discipline, trigger control, and consistent practice remain non-negotiable.

The shooter who does not train will struggle no matter what is mounted on the gun.

With proper training, most drawbacks can be managed, and most advantages can be maximized. The goal is not to chase trends. The goal is to identify what works best for your needs, then train with it until performance becomes consistent and automatic.

Equipment does not create performance. Training does.

Instead of asking which optic is better?” Decide for yourself, “Which system will enable me to perform – consistently, under pressure, in my environment?”

One thing to keep in mind while researching: the firearms space is full of strong opinions. Some are earned through experience. Others are driven by marketing.

Not every “expert” is objective.

“This guide is built to cut through that noise and give you a practical framework to make an informed decision based on your needs – not someone else’s agenda. The views expressed here are my own and do not reflect those of any specific manufacture or organization. This is the result of 35 years of R&D, issued duty carry, personal EDC optics, range training, and competitions that I’ve either taught, hosted or participated in.”

For clarity, we’ll focus on the two most common color options: red and green dot optics.

Key Differences Between Red and Green Dots

Green dot optics are generally preferred for bright daylight and outdoor shooting. The human eye is more sensitive to green wavelengths, making the reticle appear brighter and often sharper—especially for users with astigmatism.

Red dot optics perform exceptionally well in low-light conditions and indoor environments. They typically offer longer battery life and are widely compatible with night vision devices.

Advantages and Limitations

Green Dot Optics

High visibility in bright daylight

Faster target acquisition outdoors

May blend into green backgrounds

Reduced eye strain for astigmatism

Higher cost and fewer options

Shorter battery life

Red Dot Optics

Excellent in low light and indoor settings

Can appear dim in bright sunlight

Compatible with night vision

May blur for some users with astigmatism

More affordable and widely available

Longer battery life (often 20,000+ hours)

Practical Recommendations

Outdoor shooting or hunting: Green dot is often preferred.

Home defense or low-light use: Red dot is typically the better choice.

Final Thoughts

The best optic is the one that performs reliably for your vision, your environment, and your intended use. Selection should be based on function—not preference or popularity.

Red dots have been the dominant choice for decades across military, law enforcement, and civilian shooters.

Why red dominates: Proven track record – long history in combat and duty use, Battery efficiency – longer runtimes vs most green emitters, Availability – more models, price points, and mounting options, Durability – widely vetted under hard use, Training standard – most instructors and programs are built around red

Bottom line: If you walk into a unit, agency, or serious training environment, red is still the baseline.

Why shooters choose green: Perceived brightness – the human eye picks up green faster, Better for some vision types – especially astigmatism in certain cases, Daylight visibility – can stand out more in bright conditions, Faster acquisition (for some) – easier to “find the dot” under stress.

Bottom line: Green is not niche anymore, and it’s still not the dominant standard.

Whenever possible, evaluate optics in person before making a purchase. Most retailers will allow you to handle optics prior to mounting. When doing so:

Hold the optic at full presentation (arm’s length), consistent with how it will be used on a pistol or rifle and view the dot against a variety of backgrounds inside the store

If available, look outside to assess performance in natural light and at distance

Observe how the reticle appears under different lighting conditions and contrast levels in bright light, shadows and mixed environments.

Take time to operate the controls:

Ensure brightness adjustments are intuitive and accessible

Confirm the interface is simple and efficient to use

Verify that the dot is clear and usable for your vision

A properly selected optic should integrate seamlessly with your shooting process – not require adaptation under stress.

Make an informed decision and test all options in person whenever possible – your eyes and environment will determine the best fit.

It’s not the optic. It’s not the brand. It’s not the price. It’s how you train

Everyday pistol carry with an appendix holster is just one of several effective options for carrying a sidearm in daily life. There is no one-size-fits-all method. The right choice begins with an honest assessment of your environment, your mission, and the risks you may realistically face.

What you are doing, where you are going, and the overall threat environment are some of the most important factors to consider when deciding whether to carry a pistol for personal safety. Your clothing, daily movement, comfort, access, concealment, and ability to safely deploy the weapon all matter.

Appendix carry offers advantages in speed, concealment, and weapon retention, but like any carry method, it must be approached with discipline, training, and sound judgment. The goal is not just to carry a pistol, but to carry it in a manner that is safe, practical, and suited to your specific situation.

“Appendix carry enables speed and demands discipline”

Appendix carry with an everyday pistol is fast, concealable, and efficient, but it demands strict muzzle discipline and a clean, repeatable draw.

Appendix holster draw fundamentals

Appendix carry usually places the pistol around the 12 to 1 o’clock position for a right-handed shooter, or 11 to 12 o’clock for a left-handed shooter. The biggest advantage is speed and access, especially from standing, seated, or inside a vehicle. The biggest concern is safety during holstering and careless garment clearing.

Core principles

Use a rigid holster or specifically designed clothing that fully covers the trigger guard.

Use a sturdy belt, band or specifically design clothing for concealed pistol carry so the holster does not shift.

Keep the trigger finger straight and high on the frame until sights are on target and you have decided to fire.

Draw fast, reholster[1] slow.

Reholstering your sidearm is done safely, deliberately and controlled, when the threat no longer presents a danger to you or the tactical situation permits (for those in tactical/duty concealed carry environments).

The draw can be fast; the reholster should never be.

[1] Reholstering is the act of returning a firearm to its holster. It should always be done slowly/safely, deliberately and controlled to help prevent negligent discharges. There is no prize for speed. The most important rules are to keep your trigger finger straight and off the trigger, and to visually inspect the holster before reholstering to make sure no clothing, cords, or debris have entered the mouth of the holster.

Some shooters recommend removing the holster from the body before inserting the firearm, especially when using soft-sided or collapsible holsters. Others safely reholster with the holster still worn by using the support hand to clear cover garments and maintaining positive control of the firearm throughout the process. Regardless of method, the safety standard remains the same: never force the firearm into the holster. If you feel resistance, stop immediately and identify the obstruction before continuing.

Appendix draw sequence

What matters most
The grip must be complete before the gun leaves the holster. If you adjust the grip after the draw, you lose speed and control.

After a high-stress or life-threatening event, your body is still in fight-or-flight mode. If you don’t consciously reset, you stay locked into tunnel vision, auditory exclusion, and poor decision-making.

Appendix-specific safety
The most dangerous part is usually when reholstering, not drawing. When your life is threatened, your body activates the flight of fight response, releasing hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. This increases heart rate, sharpens senses, and diverts blood flow to major muscle groups to prepare for action.

One shot from the draw

Two shots from the draw

Draw to first accurate hit on an 8-inch circle

Seated draw if your range allows it

full trigger coverage

adjustable retention

concealment claw or wing

belt wedge if needed for comfort and concealment

Bottom line
Appendix carry works extremely well for everyday pistol carry if your gear is solid and your drawstroke is disciplined. Fast draw, slow reholster, no shortcuts.

Author: Robert “Ninja” Porras | CEO/Founder NinjaBobSolutions LLC

“All statements of fact, opinion, or analysis expressed are those of the author and do not reflect the official positions or views of the US Government. Nothing in the contents should be construed as asserting or implying US Government authentication of information or endorsement of the author’s views.”[i]

Phrase explained:

Carrying an extra magazine can provide peace of mind and increased readiness in case of emergencies, as it offers more ammunition and a backup if your primary magazine fails. However, it also adds bulk and may complicate your everyday carry setup.

Phrase explained as a Ninja-ism:

There we were – FOB Marez[ii], Mosul, Iraq – during one of the most contentious periods of the Global War on Terror.

As a team leader on the first of many deployments to that base, I found myself in the team room getting the “scoop[iii]” from my 2IC[iv] on our operational tempo in the area of operations (AO). He had already been on the ground for eight to nine months and had a solid grasp of our recent operational history. He talked me through local threats on the SITMAP; recent attacks on and off base, and the types of operations our military counterparts were conducting.

After hearing all of it, I was ready to get after it. So, I asked the obvious question: “When’s the last time we went out and conducted ops in the AO?” The answer caught me off guard. “As far as I know, we haven’t been out in about six months—it was too dangerous.” That didn’t sit right with me. Supporting clandestine operations in high-threat environments is why we existed. It’s what we do. “We’ll see about that.”

I continued through the standard in-processing briefs with our office and with the U.S. Army ground and air units on base. When I got back to the team room, I issued a WARNO[v] for an AFAM[vi]. It was time to do our job.

Most of the team was ready to move—except for two. Shockingly, the hesitation came from the very ones I expected to step forward first. Both came from Army and Navy Special Operations—guys who should have been leading the charge but instead seemed comfortable riding out their tours on base.

Planning was complete. It was time to execute.

The environment was lethal. U.S. Army ground units were taking hits on patrol. Route clearance teams were detonating IEDs[vii] on their morning runs. Reports were constant—suicide bombings in markets, base attacks, and IED strikes at nearby traffic circles.

This wasn’t theoretical. This was the reality in Mosul.

Long story short – on the day of the AFAM mission, everything was set. Vehicles were prepped. The team was briefed. Adjacent units were coordinated. U.S. military air assets were on standby. QRF[i] was in place. We were ready to roll.

I stepped back into the team room to grab a few last-minute items – probably a couple of Rip Its[ii] – and saw the two hesitant team members still sitting there. I asked them, “You ready?” One of them wasn’t even scheduled to go on the mission, but both looked at me – serious, tense…concerned. Not excitement. Not focus. Concern. They asked if we could talk. “Of course.” They laid it out straight – they didn’t think the mission was worth it. Too dangerous. “The juice isn’t worth the squeeze.”

I looked at them and gave them a simple answer: “If you’re scared…bring another magazine.” Then I ended it where it needed to end: “The team is ready. Let’s go.”

Takeaways

If the situation feels dangerous—and the mission doesn’t allow avoidance—then you prepare for it. This isn’t bravado. It’s discipline. It’s about refusing to let fear dictate action. Fear is expected in high-risk environments. Letting it dictate action is not.

Avoidance is unacceptable when the mission matters

The answer is not retreat—it’s preparation

You don’t eliminate danger—you stack capability against it

Environment: High-threat AO (IEDs, VBIEDs, daily contact)

Failure: Experienced operators defaulted to comfort over mission

Turning Point: leadership was confident in the capabilities of the team and re-established purpose and tempo.

Bottom Line “Fear is input. Not direction”

This is leadership under pressure. Fear was acknowledged. Excuses were presented. A decision was made. The response wasn’t recklessness (maybe a little sarcastic) – it was deliberate planning and decisive execution.

Fear is input, not direction

So how did it go? I’m glad you asked…

Mission accomplished

It was Mosul—during one of the most active periods for enemy activity. It was dangerous. That was made clear and was never in question. We identified two hostile checkpoints. Took contact. Received reports of a developing ambush. And we executed.

Pre-planned contingencies were put into action. The team adapted, maintained control, and returned to base with exactly what we went out for—ground truth. All personnel accounted for. All equipment accounted for. Mission accomplished.

Charlie Mike[i].

That is my story about leadership in a high-threat environment – but at its core, it’s really about preparedness, and my confidence in our team’s preparedness. It’s not realistic to live your life in isolation, and it’s no way to live in fear. The answer is awareness. Be aware of the threats in your environment and be prepared. It’s a continuous process.

You may live in a good neighborhood—but what about:

Your place of work?

The route between Point A and Point B?

Your regular stops—gas stations, grocery stores, ATMs?

Is the vehicle that you rely on for your daily activities at 100%? Without going to your vehicle to check, what’s your fuel level reading? Be honest. Oil level reading? How about tire pressure?

Those everyday places are where complacency and unpredictability exists. Make an honest assessment of your environment and your level of preparedness to respond to a logical incident. If you choose to carry a sidearm, ask yourself: Is one magazine enough? That answer depends on your environment, your level of training, your perceived threat and your willingness to prepare. Only you can make that call and it’s up to you to be prepared.

But understand this – equipment alone is not the solution.

Preparation requires discipline:

Get to the range often

Build efficiency with your weapon system

Stay aware of your surroundings

Maintain some level of physical fitness

Pay attention to crime trends where you live and where you’re going

Do your homework.

You don’t need to be in a warzone for danger to exist. Crime happens—more in some places than others, and at different times of day. Being prepared isn’t about paranoia—it’s about responsibility. The more disciplined you are in preparing for the most likely scenarios, the more capable you’ll be when something unexpected happens.

Because when life takes a sudden turn…you won’t have time to prepare. You’ll rely on what you’ve already built. The time to prepare is now.

Benefits of Carrying an Extra Magazine

Increased Readiness and Capacity

More Rounds: An extra magazine provides additional ammunition, which can be crucial in a high-stress situation.

Quick Reloads: It allows for faster reloading, helping to clear malfunctions or jams effectively.

Peace of Mind

Confidence Boost: Carrying a spare magazine can enhance your sense of security, especially in high-risk environments.

Preparedness: Knowing you have extra capacity can help you stay focused and alert.

Drawbacks of Carrying an Extra Magazine

Added Bulk and Weight

Comfort Issues: An extra magazine can add weight, making your carry setup less comfortable, especially in warmer weather.

Concealment Challenges: It may print under clothing, drawing unwanted attention.

Overcomplication

Simplicity Matters: A minimalist approach can be more effective. Carrying too much gear can slow you down and discourage daily carry.

How to Carry an Extra Magazine

Carry Options

Pocket Carry: Common but can be slow and inconsistent. Ensure nothing else is in the pocket to avoid complications.

Holster or Carrier: Using a dedicated magazine carrier is the most reliable method. Options include inside-the-waistband (IWB) or outside-the-waistband (OWB) carriers.

Mag Clips: A magnetic clip that holds the magazine securely, offering a low-profile carry option.

Choosing to carry an extra magazine is about balancing preparedness with practicality. Consider your lifestyle and comfort when making this decision.

What are the benefits of carrying an extra magazine for self-defense?

Carrying an extra magazine for self-defense increases your ammunition capacity, allowing for quick reloads in high-pressure situations, which can be crucial if your primary magazine malfunctions. It also provides peace of mind and confidence, knowing you are better prepared for unexpected encounters.

Carrying an extra magazine can enhance your everyday carry by providing increased readiness and the ability to quickly address firearm malfunctions, which adds a layer of preparedness. However, it may also introduce added bulk and complexity, potentially making your setup less comfortable and more challenging to conceal.

Alternatives to carrying an extra magazine include using a pocket, a dedicated magazine carrier or holster, or off-body storage in a bag or vehicle. Each method has its own pros and cons regarding accessibility and comfort.

Acknowledge your fears or the fears of others, assess the situation, decide and act

“If you decided to carry a gun for self-defense or it’s your duty to carry a gun for your profession, then train to be a gunfighter”

Don’t think that just because you have a gun for personal protection, spent a career carrying a gun for duty, or currently in a career where you carry a gun for your profession, that you are a gunfighter. Even if you carried, or carry, a gun on your hip for an entire career, if you’ve only found yourself on the gun range when you had to qualify to maintain your CYA policies…1) you should be ashamed of yourself. 2) you were really lucky that you didn’t have to use you weapon to protect life or limb and 3) you wasted precious taxpayers’ money by being mediocre in your profession…a.k.a. an oxygen thief.

If you have chosen a career to protect the public…

If you have decided to carry a gun to protect your family against a life-threatening criminal act…

If you’ve made a conscious decision to use a gun as a private citizen or you’re required to use a gun for your profession…

A gunfighter trains with his firearm(s) like his life will depend on it. A gunfighter has the proper mental attitude to do what it takes to become proficient with their firearm of choice. A gunfighter realizes that incoming fire, isn’t friendly. A gunfighter is prepared, right now. In the context of this article, I’m talking about firearms proficiency.

Seek training by a vetted trainer and continue training on a regular basis. In your training, be creative but keep it realistic to your specific threat environment. Keep challenging yourself and never think that “you’ve got it,” or that “you’ve figured it all out.” Ask anyone who’s had to maintain proficiency with their firearms in any capacity, for their chosen profession…firearms skills are perishable.

Develop a positive mindset toward training and always continue to seek self-improvement.

Always think to yourself, “although I’m good, “I can always be better.”

Always seek self-improvement. This is a helpful mindset that applies to life in general but we’re talking specifically about our proficiency with firearms in this article.

A few words about firearms competitions, they create a certain level of stress in a safe environment, they are very useful by being around a likeminded shooting enthusiast and they are a great way to challenge yourself while displaying your weapons proficiency and competency in that specific shooting discipline. However, going to the range with a planned agenda, on what you what to accomplish with your specific threat environment in mind, will always be more beneficial to you in a gunfight than any other type of training or competition. If you have the time and money, do both. Just get the reps in.

With your specific threat environment in mind, you will have “buy-in” on your training, it’ll be fun, engaging and it’ll motivate you to become as proficient as you can. Have some fun with your training sessions and include your family and friends whenever possible.

A thoughtful and planned firearms range session is not only productive, but it is also easier on your budget, more efficient with your time and it’ll make you safer and more proficient with your chosen firearm. So, train and get the reps in, correct reps, don’t just go through the motions. It might seem like work while you seek to develop your proficiency but if you have the right mental attitude, it’ll feel like a labor of love.

Regardless of the discipline, competitive shooting, soldiering, law enforcement, sport shooting, firearms enthusiast, hunting, or as a concerned citizen…anyone worth their salt, will know that a high-level of firearms proficiency and the skills to maintain proficiency are perishable. What does that mean to you? You will have to a make it an important part of your lifestyle to maintain a regular training regimen so when the time comes for you to use your firearm to save a life, or to have a decent score during a competitive event, you will react instinctively based on your training.

As an example, when I was deployed/assigned to war-zones overseas, if possible, I went to a range to conduct a live fire drill before an op. At a minimum, I at least found the time for a few dry fire drills before going out on a mission. When I was back home in the U.S., range time was far and few in between not on a regular schedule and happy hour was a very popular thing to do, every night. “Being seen” at the local bar earned you some cool guy points for sure but when I focused on more important things in life, I “sacrificed” a very popular social event after work for an hour on the range before going home.

It’s easy, you just develop the right mindset and focus on what you value most. I figured that I carry a gun for a reason and my life and the life of those that I love is what I value most, so, to the range I went. Time and money well spent. Now family, fitness and your health should also be an important aspect of your life so find that balance.

Get your eyes and ears and I hope to see you on the range. ~ Ninja
